The earliest greeting cards were handmade and date to ancient China, but by the 1850s they were being published thanks to advances in printing and the invention of the postage stamp in 1840.The Enoch Pratt Greeting Card Collection contains over 71,000 items dating back to 1870. The majority of the cards are Christmas, but other celebratory events are represented including Valentine’s Day, Easter, baby shower, and graduation.
